Vancouver Newborn Photography | Our Favourite Natural Poses
We are unique in that we provide barely posed, natural yet refined newborn photography, to capture details beautiful AND capture a feeling in every photo. Kim’s attention to detail guides her in finding the perfect pockets of light and angles for beautiful newborn photos, but posing plays a huge part as well.
In this blog post we are sharing Kim’s favourite natural poses that help showcase baby’s details, while capturing the connection with meaningful photos.
#1: In Parents’ Hands
This works on both awake or asleep babies, keeping feet comfortable tucked up to show off baby’s tiny size and to help provide a feeling of security, while allowing us to see baby’s skin and details.
#2: Nose-to-Nose
When we have beautiful bright light coming through a window, we love to highlight baby’s tiny profile, and what better way than for one of the parents to show a little love? This pose is a highly requested favourite from the families we work with.
#3: Curly
There are few technical names for this pose, but we call it the “curly” pose. The key to this pose is lots of supports (we use rolled up wraps or towels) under baby’s bum and head, tilting baby’s head to the light.
#4: Facing Out - No Wrap
We love how this pose lets us see baby’s face really well, while still giving that feeling of closeness and connection. It can easily look sloppy and awkward, so it’s important to work with a skilled photographer who takes the time to get baby positioned just perfectly, with chin rested on hands and head rested comfortably but not flopped too far to one side.
#5: Chin on Hands
This is a more advanced pose, and typically is best when baby is soundly asleep, as an awake baby can kick forward or pull the face in. The key is lots of supports under baby’s hands, keeping the face tilted up to the light and not squished down into the blanket. We love this photo with baby in a bonnet, but can keep it simple with no accessories.
#6: Facing Out - Wrapped
Some babies just do better with the extra security and comfort of a wrap, so we love this pose for showing their face and tiny size, while letting the parent hold them close.
#7: Holding Hands
Although this example shows twins, this pose also works for baby with an older sibling or parent. This simple pose allows us to see their hands, and it shows off their connection in such a sweet way.
#8: Peekaboo Toes
While our style doesn’t rely heavily on props, we often use a simple basket setup in neutral tones just to show off baby’s tiny size. For the extra curly babies who love to tuck their feet up high, we love to wrap them with their toes out. It’s such a cute way to see their tiny toes, while keeping the style more simple and natural.
#9: On Chest
If your baby loves to snuggle up on your chest or shoulder, we love positioning them here for photos. We can see their tiny hands, chubby cheeks, and it also gives such a warm and cozy vibe to any photo.
#10: Headshot
If your baby happens to be awake during their session, we love to take some close-ups of their face. We usually have a parent or assistant tucking and holding their feet, out of frame, to keep them feeling secure and comfy. Sometimes a set of keys or a jingling toy helps give them something to focus on, which allows us to capture the cutest expressions like this one.
